CHARLES WINKLEY
At Grocers 1876-1882
One of the earliest “Old Boys”, Winkley left The Grocers’ Company’s School at Hackney Downs in 1882 (or just before) and went to seek his fortune at the age of 19 in South Africa. There he laid rails on the Cape to Cairo railway but, at some point, returned to Hackney where, at the end of the first decade of the new 20th Century, Returned to Hackney and for some years was  in business with his brother as a builder.
He became he became Mayor of Hackney (1913-14)

Among his official duties was to open Clapton Library which building was reported in 2009 as about to undergo restoration!
